Swedana

Understanding the Therapy

Swedanam is an Ayurvedic therapy that induces sweating using steam, warm herbal decoctions, or heat packs. It is done after oil application to open the channels (srotas), loosen toxins, and prepare the body for detoxification. It is considered a key Purvakarma procedure before Panchakarma.

Clinical Purpose

Swedanam is performed to dilate the channels and remove stiffness, mobilize and expel toxins (ama), prepare the body for Vamana, Virechana, and other Panchakarma therapies, relieve pain, heaviness, and coldness caused by Vata–Kapha imbalance, and promote better absorption of medicated oils applied in prior treatments.

Ideal For

It is beneficial for people with: Body stiffness, muscle tightness, or joint pain; Respiratory congestion (Kapha disorders); Heaviness or swelling in the body.
