World Liver Day: Boost your liver health with Ayurveda
Liver, as per Ayurveda is one of the most important organs of the human body. It performs not one but many crucial functions, such as filtration & detoxification of blood, while playing a significant role in digestion & metabolism. In Vedas, liver is mentioned under the names of ‘Yakna’ or ‘Takima’ along with many other synonyms such as Jyotisthana, Kalakhanda, Raktadhara, and Yakritpinda. By nature Ayurveda considers the liver as ‘pittic’ or hot because of the fiery energy of Pitta. However, excessive fiery energy can lead to physical problems. This makes it very essential to have a healthy liver to carry out a healthy lifestyle. This World Liver Day, we are sharing some tips to keep your liver healthy.
Maintain body Weight: Body weight plays an important role in keeping a liver healthy. According to Ayurveda, obesity is one of the main causes of fatty liver, which could be avoided by simply monitoring and reducing the number of calories that we eat in a day. Those who have their body weight under control should focus on maintaining it by the means of exercise or adapting to a healthy diet.
Keep a Healthy Diet: With a healthy diet not only can one balance the doshas but also support the liver function. A healthy plant based diet which is rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains is important for avoiding liver diseases. Ayurveda also suggests reducing the consumption of excessive fatty foods, which cause inflammation of liver cells by the accumulation of fat in the liver. And at the same time focus more on the consumption of whole foods rather than processed ones.
Detoxify: One of the major functions of the liver includes the breakdown of harmful chemicals & to prevent them from entering the circulation. With an unhealthy lifestyle, harmful toxins easily accumulate in the liver, which could harm the liver cells. Detoxification eradicates the impurities from the blood in the liver, where all the toxins are processed for elimination. One can take help of certain Ayurvedic detox therapies like Basti, Vaman, Virechan, and more to help remove these toxins & rejuvenate the liver cells.
Practice Yoga & Pranayama: Yoga has been a scientifically proven method of enhancing the health of the liver. Not only does it reduce the stress on the liver, but also regulates the liver function by improving its health. Pranayama on the other hand effectively treats many liver problems effectively and aids in liver stimulation. Some Yoga asanas & Pranayama that can stimulate the liver are Kapalbhati, Mandukasan, Bhujasana, Dhanurasana and more.
Say no to drugs: A long term addiction of tobacco, alcohol, or any other substance abuse damages liver cells, which leads to chronic diseases like fibrosis, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, malignancies, and more. Thus it is advised to refrain from drugs & maintain a healthy routine that improves the liver health by reversing the cell damage process.
Consume Herbs: As per Ayurveda, certain herbs are essential for maintaining & nourishing the liver cells. Adding herbs in the daily diet not only calms & pacifies the imbalance of pitta, but also reduces the liver congestion. Along with that, herbs also stabilize the liver, support the enzymatic detox process, and increase the bile flow. Here are some herbs that Ayurveda encourages to add in the daily diet in order to have a healthy liver- Amla, Turmeric, Guduchi, Triphala, Aloevera, and many more.
